hi guys i have just ordered a dell dimension 4600 p4
online and before i even set it up i just want to ask a
few questions ( it is not here yet )

i know i need to install the firewall before even
connecting to the internet and download the critical
updates right away

question 1 do i download all of the updates or just
certain ones if it is just certain ones anyone able to
tell me which ones i should download (i dont mind
downloading them all with dsl usually doesnt take too long
to download anyways)

i will also download adware and things like that and
update all my drivers and anti-virus

is there anything else i should do to be protecting myself
while online?

Download all the Critical Updates Windows Update offers you.

Well, since you asked .. if your ISP e-mail account is pop3, then I would pop the e-mail on the server before bringing it into your e-mail client (like maybe Outlook Express). That will allow you to see who the e-mail is from and will give you the opportunity to delete it from the server prior to bringing it into your e-mail client. This adds a layer of protection for your system from virus e-mail. You can also get the addy of the sender from the pop tool and then add that addy to blocked e-mail addys in your regular e-mail client. You should be able to find a pop3 tool on the Net.

I would suggest before going online to turn on icf on
windows xp
download all updates which are plenty..... i recently
installed xp and had to download about 70 updates.
Adware and spybot are a plus. i run mine ever 3 weeks. Av
program is highly recommended. Fire wall is a good idea i
have both a physical and software firewalls.....

thanks never thought about doing that

I ignore Outlook Express updates, because the first thing I did with
my new XP system was to delete Outlook Express. The first thing I did
after downloading and installing Opera and ZoneAlarm was to tell
ZoneAlarm never to allow MSIE to access the Internet. Opera handles
Web browsing and mail, and could read Usenet, but I prefer Agent.

Having the two biggest security holes in Windows blocked means that
most of the updates don't apply. I'd get rid of Internet Exploiter
completely, but I've heard that it's hooked so deeply into the OS that
killing it would cripple the system.

You can't delete Outlook Express in XP AFAIK. All you did was to remove the
program icons.

You can't do that in XP either.

I went thorough the same process in November with the
same (4600) system bought from Dell.

Let me give you one tip I should have abided by but
didn't.

If you go to Windows for the updates, you'll see (besides
the critical ones) a bunch of others for your system.

Do NOT get the Nvidia graphics driver from Microsoft (if
indeed that is the graphics card you have). ALWAYS get
the drivers from the Hardware vendor's site.

I downloaded from MS and, honestly, think my system has
had a problem since then that I haven't been able to
remedy.
