i want to change my system to windows xp my system now is mellinum and i hate
dealing with it

Go to your computer manufacturer's web site and verify that it has WXP
drivers for it. Some manufacturers, like HP, cripple the system so that it
can not be used with any other OS than the one originally installed on it.
If drivers are available, they verify that you have at least 256 megabytes
of memory. This is the absolute minimal memory for a usable WXP system, and
you will probably be unhappy with anthing less than 512MB, especially if
your video shares the main memory. Also, be sure your hard drive has at
least 15GB; you will probably be unhappy with anything less than 30 GB.

Something you might like to know Paul.
When XP Pro came out, the minimum RAM was 64MBs; recommended 128MB up to 4G
And minimum HDD was 2Gig upwards.

I know what it ran like with that hardware; very slowly!
But, it did run!

So, 256 is not absolute minimum; it is your minimum.

Thanks for the info. It has been a while since I ran any OS on a system
with less than 256MB RAM. I would believe your numbers more than mine.

Before starting, however, have you verified that all of your PC's
hardware components are capable of supporting WinXP? This information
will be found at the PC's manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's
Windows Catalog: (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many early
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

If it has taken you some 8 years to decide you hate ME, maybe all you need
to do is reinstall ME fresh and reinstall your programs. Often they just
get mucked up in that period of time In addition to what many here have
said about hardware, you will also find that a lot of programs needed newer
versions to be able to run on XP. I suggest you start saving up for an up
to date computer with either XP or Vista on it and count on having to
replace some of your hardware and software.
