I have a SE440BX-2 Intel Motherboard and am running a 20 gig HD
(ATA66) and a 40 gig HD (ATA100). Now the motherboard can only run at
ATA33 speeds which in turns slows my HD's way down. My question is
can I get a controller card such as the Promise Ultra 100 TX2 and run
my HD's at there peak potential? Or am I limited to the ATA33 speeds?
I'm kinda new at this so any help would be appriciated. Also I am
running Windows XP Pro SP1. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

You can use a Promise board in an SE440BX-2 with no trouble, however first
go to the drive manufacturer's Web site and check the internal transfer
rate of the drive and make sure that it's actually capable of filling a 33
MB/sec pipe. Most ATA66 drives can't and not all that many ATA100 drives
can.

A controller card like the Promise Ultra100 TX2 or the HighPoint Rocket133SB
is the way to go. Either will allow maximum speed from your existing hard
drives. Both support hard drives over 137GB and are bootable.

Only the ATA100 drive in single drive usage and probably
only for the faster zones, like the first 10GB or so.

Yup. And probably not notice much difference.

From what I have been reading the Promise Ultra100 TX2 has had
problems with windows XP. Any suggestions or thoughts on that?
Thanks for the help.

What problems have you read about and where, please?

I have the Maxtor OEM version of the TX2 and have intermittent
problems under 98SE and was hoping that XP would solve them....

More info or pointers would be gratefully received.
