I have installed Ethernet cards in both PC's with a cable
connecting them. I thought I wouldn't need a hub or
switch?
Thanks, Bill

You do unless you have a cross-over cable
Paul's correct. But recently I saw an adapter that could perform the
crossover function for a couple of quid on one of the computing/office
supplies catalogues (UK, Inmac/microwarehouse maybe). At long last! I often
wondered why no-one's invented one of these yet.

Actually Intel is promoting network cards can autodetect if the cable is a
cross over or not and can automatically adjust the network cards behavior
accordingly.

This is a great diagnostics feature .

That might be fun if there's an intel card on each end and they spend
endless hours deciding which one's going to be the crossed one.

Well it's cable detection, it is a matter of the card determining if it
should switch pin polarity around or not ;)
