hi i am looking to implement a windows 2000 installation soon and have a
question regards dynamic dns and host records. i have one central site and
four remote sites connected via high speed wan links, i understand that in
order to use dynamic dns instead of wins every computer on the internal
network would need to register its name to ip address record in the internal
ddns zone, the question i have is this, can i structure the ddns zone for
clients, such that for each site they put their host records in a particular
subdomain of the internal ddns zone, eg site1.mydomain.local,
site2.mydomain.local etc etc, this would mean it would be easier to view and
administer the internal ddns zone should anything go wrong.

is this possible or am i just being too tidy for my own good? :-), if it is
possible how is this done?.

many thanks,

paul.

I would recommend you just put all the workstations at each site in the one
zone. There is no need to split them up and creating new zones only gives
you a higher administrative burden with no real benefit I can think of.

If you want this aproach, then you would have to create separate child
domains (site1.domain.com, site2.domain.com), but this would create
different problems (more DC's and administrative overhead).

This is possible. You would need to change the primary DNS suffix on the client machines to match that of the subdomain you
want the client to register in. You would also need to enable the "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix" option on the
Advanced properties page of TCP/IP so that the clients can find the domain they are members of. Test this thoroughly though.
AD wasn't designed with this in mind.
