Hi,

I recently built my wife a machine using a motherboard/cpu that I had
purchased, I then purchased an
OEM edition of Win XP Pro to run on it.

It had been activated and running for about 2-3 months, when the motherboad
began developing trouble.

It ended up being more feasible to get a new computer that is an 'all in
one' style, with sound/video/lan integrated,
so we ended up not using the remainder of her components, simply selling
them to offset the cost of the new system.

So now we arent using the old HD (its moved to the main computer) and the
rest of the parts are gone now.

Being that I bought my OEM edition with her case and some ram IIRC, can I
transfer this license to the new machine,
being that the old one died? or did my OEM license die with the MB that it
was activated on?

Not worried if it involves me mailing our old CD/CoA/manuals back to MS to
trade or whatever, I just dont want to
lose a copy of a useful OS simply because of an unforseeable failure.

Thanks in advance,
Philip

The license went with the old computer. A OEM version can't be moved from
the computer that it was first installed on. One of the problems with OEM
versus retail.

See, I was under the impression that it stayed with the piece of hardware it
was sold with, in this case, not the MB/CPU
but the Case/RAM, neither of which is windows capable of detecting (well, if
it was registered ram i suppose...)

This sucks.
If it was XP Home, it would be less of a loss.

Greetings --

An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to
another computer under any circumstances. This is the main reason
some people avoid OEM versions; if the PC dies or is otherwise
disposed of (even stolen), you cannot re-use your OEM license on a new
PC.
