Panda Man,
I appreciate your help and will try to give all the details. I will answer
in with your reply:
Panda_man : What you are talking about is probably not shortcuts but renames
such as
File.exe
File(1).exe
File(2).exe
Well, for example, when I go to Start, All Programs, and look into the list
of Microsoft Office. One item I can click is Micorsoft Office Access. Now,
in addition to that link or shortcut, there is Microsoft Office Access(2),
Microsoft Office Access (2)(2), and Microsoft Office Access (3).
This goes on for each and everything listed under All Progrmas under the
Start Menu.
If your System Restore renamed files the restoration was successful.
However ,you say it didn't work because it didn't fixed the problem.
If you have malware and your antivirus is blocking ,the malware will not be
fixed by System Restore. If it is from a setting in the AV ,again System
Restore won't fix.
OK, the System Restore did not fix the problem, I believe it to be a setting
in the AV program... just just a hunch though.
Panda_man : Only manually .
Oh, gosh, it will take me forever to delete 3 copies of it all... but if
that is how it has to be done.. ; (
So ,please provide more info
1) Operating System - name and Service Pack level
MS Windows XP Service Pack 2
2) The status of Automatic updates and do you have ALL updates from
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
My computer is brand new, I did not purchase it with any AV software. We
purchased and installed System Mechanic 6 Professional, which has (in part)
AV and Firewall by Kaspersky Labs. We immediately updated the programs in
System Mechanic 6 and all the available Windows updates
4) Antispyware software -> name ,kind ,version ,updates...
It is included in the SM 6 package and as far as I know, should be checking
daily for updates.
5) Do you have malware detected? What did your security softwares do?
Each time we have run a scan of system, nothing has been detected.
6) Explain CLEARLY the problem
Just because it is easier to analyze/read.
There is some problem with the outgoing email. When it fails, it gives this
message,
Socket Error 10057 Error # 0x800ccc0e. Now the strange thing is, the same
problem occured about a week ago and the System Restore worked in fixing it.
This time, when the outgoing email was not being sent, the System Restore did
not work.
I would rather figure out what the problem is and correct it that use the
System Restore... (which did not fix it this time anyway)
I have tried to include everything. I think I will manually update the AV &
Spyware and then scan the system to see if it detects anything.
One other thing that may be of interest.. We had first purchased Defender
Pro Package for our new computer, but could not get it to work and it was
taking them too long to assist. We uninstalled the package and requested a
refund from them. Which they so graciously gave us the option of doing.
We then purchased and installed System Mechanic 6 and it worked flawlessly
for a while before we had this email snafu... and I thought this would be
very easy since it was on a brand new computer system... ; )
I appeciate all your help and let me know if I can provide any other info I
may have left out.
Thanks Sheila
