Is it possible for me to run a program, saay Quicken, entirely from my
portable drive? So that even if my laptop wqas stolen, they would still not
be able to access any of my financial stuff.

If not, is there an equivalent way of doing it such that even if my laptop
is stolen, my financial data is safe?

Thanks for your help!

Only a few programs can be run without being installed, i.e., entirely
from a USB drive (for example), but their number is growing. Search for
so-called portable applications. Also look at the U3 platform.

I don't believe Quicken can be run this way.

Yes, it will work. You just need to set up your files on the portable drive
and point Quicken to the files so it can find them and use them at that
location from that point forward.

Set up a folder on your portable drive called Quicken Files or something
like that. Move your current Quicken files into the new folder. Start
Quicken (programs are still installed on your C drive). Once Quicken
starts, it will display a screen asking if you're a first-time user because
it can't find Quicken files on you C drive. Respond according to your
version of Quicken that you have existing Quicken files and then click
File/Open and open the file you want in Quicken Files. Close Quicken.
Every time you open Quicken, it will open the file located in Quicken Files.
Also, if you have multiple Quicken files, every time you select File/Open,
Quicken will list files in Quicken Files. When you do your Quicken backup,
you can back up your files to a folder on your C drive if you want. That
way, if anything happens to your portable drive, you have a backup. Call
the folder something like Quicken Backup Files.

The process described above will work for most applications. Some will only
run with their data files on the C drive. Office products (Word, etc.) will
let you put your files anywhere, you just need to reset the default
drive/folder in the Options menu.

Hope this helps.
