Question on VPN using static IP

I have W2K server connected to internet over DSL. The ISP has provided
68.236.x.y static address. I have configured this all as per
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=52 (but without a ISA
server). All is fine.

I want to connect my home Laptop to this server over VPN/internet to share
the resources by "Map network drive" option. My home computer is an XP and
connects internet via a cable modem. I can ping my server's IP address. But
unable to connect to it over VPN client setup.

I have perfomed the same test successfully with my Laptop in the office and
the VPN server address is set to local 192.168.10.z I guess, the static IP on
the Linksys router is not passing the traffic to Servers' Internal NIC? Any
suggestions how to resolve this?

To test without NAT on server side, can you try configuring your LinkSys
router on W2K server side in bridge mode and give the static IP (68.236.x.y)
to your public interface of W2K server. Normally these routers can be
configured in pure bridge mode or connect your server directly to your xDSL
modem.

Samir,

Conceptually, I understand your point. I dont see any options in the router
configuration web-page to define bridging between 68.236.x.y to 192.168.1.100
(Server's NIC). Can you please advise how to go about this?

Can you connect your server's public NIC directly to DSL modem's ethernet.
And configure it with 68.236.x.y address.
Just to give a try. Because VPN server behind NAT may be an issue.
VPN client behind NAT can work.

Some basic queries which I forgot:-
Is your VPN connection L2TP/IPSec or PPTP?
What is your VPN client (XP SP2 ??)

I tried bypassing the router as advised by you. It still unable to connect. I
tried using XP sp1, Xp sp2 and W2K workstation. /all give similar errors.

Hmm - now I am confused too. I thought your VPN server setup is working as
you tried your laptop (VPN client) by connecting to VPN server directly in
office.
So the track I was following was it must be NAT issue (VPN server behind
NAT).

But it seem to be some configuration issue:-
-> What error is the VPN client giving, when you connect ?
-> I would recommend you to try going through the step by setup given in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/networking/rmotevpn.mspx
