I am currently using Windows XP Pro on an 80g HD. I want to partition
it using Ranish, so that I can install Fedora. When I attempted to
partition it I would get a warning informing me that "my partitions are
overlapping." I want to create at least a 20g partition to install
Fedora. I have 2 HD's C:80g(master) and D:200g (slave). Any help out
there?

The one and only thing I've found good of all the linux distros I've tried

(and if you're already having trouble I'd give it up right now and save
yourself a world of pain)

is that they come with their own partition managers - if you have a
bootable disc, put it in and use the linux partition manager to make it's
partitons - the later ones are very good at explaining and making the
necessary partitons.

I've always found Ranish confusing, and been unable to undo errors, or else
see if they *have* been undone.

Ranish's Partition Manager is a powerful tool but it needs a bit of
understanding of the basics of drive geometry before it can be used to
advantage.

And the program does not touch the data or system area, just the
partition table. And if you had noted down the original information on
the C-H-S values for each partition, then you can recover from
whatever you did with the program.

I've got to admit it never did me any *harm* which is a big plus; but I'm
too much of a muppet for it; I only wanted to try fairly obvious things,
like setting up system/prog/data partitions, but I couldn't manage it -
your post clears that up, thanks.

(and life's too short and dialup too slow for linux AFAICS ;-)

Ranish is actually fairly easy to use as long as all you're doing is
creating new partitions, and you use the wizard.

You just move your cursor to the first "Unused" partition line (NOT
the MBR line) and press Enter. This starts the partition wizard.
Select the file system type for the partition (FAT32 or whatever).
Ranish will then move to the size field - enter the size you want the
partition to be. IIRC Ranish then gives you the option to format the
partition (or maybe it prompts you when you go to save the table, I
forget).

When you're done, press F2 to save the new partition table. If there
are any errors, Ranish will tell you.

You can use F3 to undo at any time. F5 changes the disk you're
working on.

BTW, he has a program called part242sim.exe included with RPM. This
program creates a file (around 16 MB) and simulates a harddisk on this
file. It is as if you are running RPM over this simulated harddisk.
Play with it till you gain confidence.
