Question on policies/settings passed from DC to client

I'm wondering what else aside from group policies are passed from a DC
to the client. Here's my dilemma.

75% of the machines on our domain have a blank Network Connections
screen. This isn't a big problem by itself. But some people can't
open DWG files in Autodesk, or click html links in Outlook. AVG won't
run but errors out and won't reinstall. RSlinx simply won't open. It
SEEMS the people who missed the 10-24-05 avg update aren't affected. I
would blame avg but for two reasons:

1. I have other customers who use AVG (paid version of course) and are
not having these problems.

2. I've done a scratch install on a machine, and until I join the
domain, the machine works fine. As soon as I join it, reboot twice
(the first reboot works fine), the problems are back.

It seems to me something is being passed from the DC to the client on
the first logon. I have no group policies or startup scripts running.
We're on a domain simply for the convenience of central
username/password storage.

Any idea's of what to look for or how to track this down?

Thanks in advance!
