Using conditional formatting one can make excel bold
values above a certain number. However if I use a < sign
in front of the number, excel always bolds in a
conditional format, even if the number is not greater than
the one specified. Does any one know how to make the
computer read the < as a regular number so that it will
work in a conditional format?

Example: If I have have <5 in a cell and want to compare
it to 6 in another cell. If I specifie bold <5 if greater
than 6, the conditional format will bold it everytime even
though it is less than 6.

thanks

Sorry, I cannot follow you question. Are you using > or < for greater than?
What is the 6 all about?

I have a column of numbers (A1:A20).
I select the range, invoke Conditional Formatting
I specify formula and type A1>5 (I may have to revisit the range and report
quotes added gratuitously by Excel)
Now the cell with values greater than 5 are bold
