Question on Chaintech 7VJL5 ?

The MOBO has three DDR slots. The manual says that memory must be
loaded in pairs (and shows two of three 2-slot combos), Is this
really true? Or can two be inserted in any combo? And also, will
just one DDR work?

Thanks

It is helpful to mention more about motherboard than just
model, like chipset and link to manufacturer page,

KT400A

Manual... says nothing about "loaded in pairs" or similar,

Maybe your old manual is wrong? Support for cheap boards
may not be as good... they gotta cut corners /somewhere/.

"Usually" no modern PC board needs pairs, except for running
in dual-channel mode (if applicable). KT400A doesn't even
have dual channel option and does not need pairs of modules.

I can't seem to find much in the way of DDR recommendation(s) for the
Chaintech 7VJL5 MOBO.

Has anyone any suggestions on the best brand etc to buy? Also, the
MOBO has 3 slots, so should I go for two 256MMB DDR 400's? Or would
one 512MB DDR be better?

I would go for one 256 is kind of small. So when you carry it over to
another system say a AMD 64 maybe later --- the 256 stick will be kind
of puny. Just get one 512 stick. They are on sale a lot nowadays
again. Ive seen everything from Crucial, patriot, Geil , Kingston
value ram, centon and pny on sale the last few months.

Obviously if you can get crucial , geil etc for $50-70 it would be a
decent price. If you cant then Kingston and even centon and PNY has
been OK for me and its been on sale from 45-65 with rebate recently.

They are having a sale on Kingston value ram for $37 512 3200 after
rebate. Cant guarantee you wont have problems like with any memory but
its worth a try. Frankly Id be surprised if you do and maybe it would
be cause they switched suppliers to some really cheapo supplier cause
Ive bought lots of KVR and PNY and centon and havent had one problem
with a variety of boards. Im using it now the same sticks I used with
the 3200 XP athlon nforce2 board asus and carried over to my chaintech
939 socket PCI express amd 64 board. And your board must have been
out for ages being a KT333. My OLDDDDD board on my second PC is a
KT333 board.

At www.newegg.com they have decent memory brands for around $52

They have geil,

Corsair

Be sure to read your manual just in case theres a particular slot you
have to use. If you dont have one for some reason you can download it
at chaintechs site.

Where did you find Kingston 512 DDR PC3200 for $37? I've looked at
Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Pricewatch as well Kingston's
Website, and can't find it.

Thanks

Its already saturday so they could end it at anytime, Maybe they
already ended it who knows.

Its still there. Its 67 -30 rebate so if you hate rebates the newegg
deals are a better deal considering they are better brands. Id get a
Kingston though right now if I wasnt way over budget getting tons of
stuff I didnt need this month cause of the sales at compusa.

Another thing memory rebates tend to take a while. Ive got all of mine
but they were in the slower range of rebates.

The newegg Kingmax 1G (512MB x 2) seems one of the best
deals right now, considering only $10 rebate.

I think I may have found what I'm looking for. Hynix --- a brand name
I never heard of until this exhaustive search--- is used by IBM and
Dell. I trust IBM implicitly to select components based on performance
and reliability and value --- in that order. I trust Dell not quite as
much, but still not a sleazy company looking only for components that
will outlast their warranty.

I found two DDRs on eBay that are listed on Intels Validation Testing
result sheet, the Hynix and a Samsung. I was surprised to see the
Samsung listed as 2.6V. I don't understand the significance of a .1V
variance, if any, but the Chaintech techie clearly said 2.5V., as does
their manual.

Any comments?

Hynix makes chips. IBM and Dell use generic memory, though
they do qualify it, like any "brand" would if that brand
weren't the actual manufacturer. Hynix isn't bad but not
necessarily any better (or worse). To put it another way,
great memory and horrible memory could either, both have
Hynix chips of one spec or another on them.

Does your board support manual memory settings? 2.6V is not
uncommon for PC3200 memory. IF your board could only do
2.5V, then you would want memory spec'd to do PC3200 @ 2.5V.
For stock speed operation on a board that can set the
voltage, this detail in itself will not matter, but all
things being equal (which they seldom are), if two modules
could both do PC3200 at exact same timings but one @ 2.5V
and the other "needed" 2.6V, the lower voltage module would
be better.

HOWEVER, variations in motherboards' memory circuits can and
often do make more of a difference than this. Some boards
are made quite cheaply and are more picky than others. I
don't know about your particular board. Buy from someplace
with a good return policy, Crucial, Newegg, etc... ideally
not ebay or other lesser-known vendors. See
resellerratings.com for vendor feedback, some of the memory
vendors are real shady.
