I have a small fan/heatsink that has become unstuck from one of the
chips. The heatsink seems to have a sticky two-sided type of very thin tape
that kept it stuck on the chip.

What is this stuff called, and where are some places that carry it?

Thanks.

you should be able to pickup another thermal pad at most any computer
store...
just carefully clean the surfaces first...
a q-tip and a little rubbing alcohol should do the trick

It's called thermal adhesive, as for local places. Pretty much any computer
upgrade stoer should have it.

Thermal adhesive tape with enough stickiness to hold a heatsink + fan is
very hard to find. Get thermal epoxy glue instead which is readily
available. Clean both surfaces thoroughly before applying.

I wouldn't bother.I would clean the surface with some clear alcohol
and apply thermal paste.

Or, if you're paranoid about it coming loose, clean it well, put a bit of
compound in the center and put a couple drops of glue on the chip corners.
Press it down tight and you'll have your thermal interface and the glue
holds it in place.

Then I don't see a good way to hold the heatsink on. He should just
find the tape mentioned by other posters.

applying thermal paste.Done it on a video card before with no ill
effects.

Yeah, I wonder if the guys who design motherboards know about that
superglue trick. :-) :-)
