Larry

Wayne, in the thread "Disaster with documents scanned into pdf" you
recommended the OmniPage Pro 14. I got it (or rather the person I'm
doing this job for got it at your website), but I am unable to install
it, as it requires that the computer have IE 5.01 and the Windows 98 SE
computer I'm working on has an impenetrable problem with downloading the
IE upgrade having to do with "damaged information in browser cache" or
something like that. I've been working on this for over a week at the
Windows 98 newsgroup, trying everything, cleaning out the Temporary
Internet Files folder and lots of other things, and still unable to
download IE.

So I'm wondering, is there an earlier version of Omnipage Pro that can
work with IE5 (not requiring IE5.01)?

Thanks,

Larry

Surely half an hour spent reinstalling Windows 98 would be preferable to a
week spent trying to fix the problem?

I'm sorry, Larry, I dont know about that situation, but my first thought is
to check to see if the disk is full. I dont know if earlier versions are
available, or their requirements, or if it would help the problem. However
if you are unable to make OmniPage Pro work, it should be good to know that
Scansoft does offer a 30 day money back warranty... contact Digital River at
http://www.digitalriver.com/cs

Re-install Windows 98. Nobody had suggested that. It think that's a
lot more than a half hour, though. I'd have to re-install all the
applications, back up and restore the entire content of the hard disk,
and so on.

Look through your collection of "magazine cover CDs" ... you just might have one that has
the Internet Explorer version 5 installer.

FWIW: Current version is V6.x ... and you can get it *free* on a CD-ROM by getting the
latest "Security Upgrade" CD from MicroSoft.

We purchased it from your site. Do you take returns?

Larry

Perhaps your problem Larry is that you just don't know how to read?
This site below (where you purcahsed Omni)
http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/e...PID=619707&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=17725

and the click through page ( http://www.scantips.com/scansoft.html#op14 )

are two entirely different sites.

Larry, returning software is almost unheard of, but yes, ScanSoft does
allow returns on software within 30 days. ScanSoft is the vendor at my
site, via their distribution agency Digital River. So if from my site,
then contact Digital River at http://www.digitalriver.com/cs

The accompanying email/documents should also specify this.

I just checked that out. I could refresh the Windows installation in a
half hour. To reinstall Windows is a much bigger job, as explained
below, and not something I would contemplate at this point:

------------------
Before you begin, gather your Windows and application CD-ROMs. Back up
your data files (just to be safe), and then clear two days off your
calendar. If everything goes smoothly, you can reinstall Windows in a
few hours. But you have to assume something will go wrong: You may not
be able to find a necessary CD, or data won't be where you thought it
was, or something will simply refuse to work.

There's a difference between a repair reinstall and a complete
reinstall. Though a repair (also called a refresh) will let you keep
your current settings, a complete reinstall will give you a truly fresh
version of Windows. Repairs are fast and easy, but they don't fix
anywhere near as many problems. The instructions below are for total
reinstalls, except where noted.

Well, I haven't given up all hope yet. The next step is to refresh the
Windows installation and see if that fixes the problem. But if that
doesn't do it, I will have exhausted all options and won't be able to
install the OmniPage and might as well return it.

Sorry about the wrongly worded question about the return. All I saw was
the link on your site. I didn't actually do the purchase (someone else
did that), so I didn't know about the difference between your site and
the Digital River site.

I'm not sure what the problem even is, it sounds like the broswser failed
during a download or install, and that incomplete status is causing the
problem continuing. Microsoft doesnt give the option to uninstall and
reinstall just the browser. Far out, but you might check the Control
Panel - Add/Remove Programs anyway, the updates are sometimes there, and
perhaps... well, I just dont know what the situation is....

I assume you have tried the Disk Cleanup option, after opening My
Computer, and right clicking on drive C, and then Properties... This
flushes away temporary files, but it may not reset the download status.

(slightly off topic)

With a little organization, reinstalling Windows 98 can be quick and simple.
The key thing is to partition the hard drive so you have Windows and
programs installed on C: and all your data on D:. Then, when Win98 goes
boots up (as it often does), all you do is reformat C: and reinstall
Windows. Yes, you then have to resinstall your applications (also to C:),
but with a little practice it doesn't take long.

The other advantage is that backing up your data from D: doesn't involve
copying stuff you don't need to keep.

Yes, but Mike, why would you want to install Windows 98 in the first
place? ;-)

I think Larry was repairing an existing system, not trying to build a new
one.

Anyway, I've been using Win98 for years with no problems whatsoever. My
requirements are modest, but I find it very reliable.

<g> It's not known for it's stability, so I think you've been lucky
:)
