C The Shocker

I just bought a P4 2.8GHz CPU, 800FSB with a PCChips M952 v1.3b motherboard
(yeah I know, it's a shitty motherboard, but it's all I could afford).
Anyway, the CPU shows up in the BIOS as a 1.4GHz processor. Hyperthreading
is turned OFF in the BIOS, and I'm not sure if I've done something wrong.
The motherboard booklet documentation is spotty at best, and I might be
missing something stupid.

Windows XP, however, detects that the CPU is 2.8GHz, but in the Hardware
Profile page, it ALSO shows it at a 1.4GHz. What am I doing wrong?? Did I
buy a lemon of a motherboard, or am I missing something?

HELP!

Thanks in advance.

Well, if I had to guess, it's interesting that the 1.4GHz works out to be
100MHz FSB x 14 (your multipler for that 800MHZ FSB CPU (200MHz clock x
14)). That suggests that the mobo is perhaps not capable of supporting a
200MHz (clock'd) Intel CPU! Or if it is, you might need a BIOS update to
recognize it properly. Not familar w/ the PC Chips mobo, but I *assume* you
can't adjust the FSB manually (if you can, great, set it to 200MHZ!).

Did you try changing the (bios or jumper) from 100 to 200MHz FSB? That's
usually the problem in a situation such as yours.

If the FSB is confirmed to be set correctly, try updating the bios.

That was it... a stupid jumper I didn't think to check.

Thanks, guys! You are awesome!

PS
There's nothing wrong with,"PCchips" motherboards. They are no better
or than expensive mother boards that promise things they can't
acheive.If you get a,"Good" motherboard,it doesn't matter ,"What" make
it is :)
PPS
Q/C like nostalgia ain't what it used to be ;-)
