Papa John--
I read your informative, detailed, very well written analysis of the various
digital camcorders that facilitate the pass through function of a line input
recording from analog devices such as a VHS camcorder.

Could you (or anyone else for that matter) please give a rank ordering of
some of the more moderately priced digital camcorders that you believe offer
the best pass through functioning for someone such as I who wants to transfer
his VHS tapes to digital format for purposes of buring DVDs?

I can't do it... but here's a link to a camcorder review site:

My guess is that it doesn't make a difference which one you go with.... the
only part of the camcorder that is being used during pass-through is the
built-in hardware codec to take the analog signal and turn it into digital
video. The quality of the lens, light gathering chip, tape mechanism, etc.
don't come into play.
