Thank you for your reply. I hope you don't mind me
mailing you at this address, but could I trouble you with
another question please.

With only 1 administrator in the house, our file server is
very rarely attended. We are being told be the firm that
write and manage our web site that in order for our SQL
database, to update the database on our website by an
automated process once a day, the file server should be
permanently logged on and locked.

Thank you for your reply regarding the above. Could I
trouble you with another question please.

With only 1 administrator in the house, our file server is
very rarely attended. We are being told be the firm that
write and manage our web site that in order for our SQL
database, to update the database on our website (which is
not hosted by us) by an automated process once a day, the
file server should be permanently logged on and locked.

As this goes against my security knowledge, which says
that the server should always be logged off when not
attended. Can you advise me if there are any additional
security risks of leaving the server locked and if it is
advisable to do so.

Many Thanks

Your knowledge is limited. Your experience is non.

Most of the time you have to leave servers logged in into some account, then
you just lock it via CTRL + ALT + DELETE. That is because most of the time
you have to use outdated software, or proprietary software, which was poorly
designed, etc, etc... Security should not be compromised if you behind
firewall and check your logs daily.
