question about video editing

I am probably in a wrong forum, but you people have given me some
really good advice in the past and I will try it here again.

I have video clips with extention (.mov). Windows Movie Maker does not
recognize it and XP Media Center does not edit movies. Is there are any
way I can recreate files with different extentions?
