Bite Me
There's a site with 8 Streaming Real Audio files. They play fine in Real
Audio (while online). However, they may be gone soon so I'd like to back
them up. I tried setting my soundcard (Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1) to
record from Stereo Mix. W98SE. This does not work. Nothing records. Other
sites on the 'Net suggest that the only way to do this is to connect the
Line Out on the sound card to the Line In and record that. I'm not too
worried about the loss of sound quality as it's mostly speech. However, one
fellow on a Soundcard NG has assured me I will probably wind up blowing up
my Soundcard:

Connecting the output to the input is extremely dangerous since it creates
the possibility of creating a feedback loop and shorting out any soundcard.
There is never any reason for connecting the output to the input except for
specialized soundcard testing software. Its simply not done for recording
ordinary internet broadcast material. (And I've been recording off the
internet for years). Doing so results in an unnecessary digital to analog
conversion and then an unnecessary analog to digital conversion. Any web
site that recommends connecting the output to the input for ordinary
recording should be taken down since its dangerous. The whole purpose of
having a recording source such as Stereo Mix (or "What you hear" with some
programs) is so that you don't have to risk shorting out the soundcards.
*****************************************************************
Fact or fiction? btw. I'm using Media Station II that came with the
Soundcard.
If fact (or a possibility) are there any other suggestions other than
running a second computer and piping the sound to that?
