Hi, I noticed that sometime my hard drive runs crazy while no big application was running. I checked and find out that there is a scan32.exe process caused this problem. I want to know is it a windows xp application? What does it do to my machine? Do I need it? Is it scheduled to run automatically? Can I control the launching of it? It is really annoying to hear the hard drive noise and to watch the flashing hard drive led while there is no big application running.

Sound like an antivirus job running.

Hi xz cheng,

As Gordon has suggested, scan32.exe appears to be a program used to
scan the computer in search of viruses, as a matter of fact, many
viruses try to disable this program when they attack, as you can see
here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=scan32 running on windows xp

Go to Start > Run and type cd\ then press enter
Type dir scan32.exe /s and press enter (note the space between e and
the forward slash)

This should reveal the directory where the program is located; you can
go there, right click and observe its properties (name, version,
company).

Hope this helps.
