question about replacing/updating products and keeping Windows XP

I have a custom built computer and after about four years my motherboard
finally broke. When this happened, I wanted to make sure it was only the
motherboard and not the processor as well. So, I borrowed my brothers CPU,
an AMD Duron, and put it into my socket A motherboard and nothing happened.
Very worried, I turned that computer off as fast as possible and then placed
the Duron back in my brothers computer. No good. So apparently my
motherboard messed that CPU up, as I had the FSB settings correct. Luckily,
my CPU, an Athlon 1600+ still was fine strangly, so I gave that to my
brother. Anyway, I finally bought a new motherboard and a new CPU. My
question to ask is will Windows XP still work fine on my computer with a new
motherboard and CPU and is it legal? I know Windows XP has very strict rules
when it comes to reinstalling Windows and using it on multiple computers.
However, this is the same PC, it's just my original motherboard broke, had to
be replaced, and I essentially "updated" the CPU. Everything else on my
computer is the same. My hard drive works fine too. Anyway, like I said,
I'm just wondering if all this is legit cause I am just replacing a broken
product and upgrading the CPU. I appreciate any help, thank you.

As long as Windows XP is retail you will not have problems.
You may need to perform a Repair Installation to properly detect the new
hardware:

You will need to activate Windows, worst case is a 5 minute call to
Microsoft.

If Windows XP is OEM, this may not be possible.

Well, the Windows XP that I have is the OEM version, as I built my computer
custom. I didn't think there would be any difference, as it just doesn't
come in all the packaging and such? Darn, I hope this won't cause me any
problems. Like I said, all I am triyng to do is replace a defective product
and then I upgraded the CPU. Since my hard drive still works fine would
Windows XP operate correctly without a reinstall? Would this be legit? Like
I mentioned earlier, I'm just trying to be honest here and don't want to get
into any trouble with this.

Was OEM Windows XP the type commonly purchased with a piece of hardware such
as a hard drive or memory?
If so, you should have no problems with a Repair Installation as described
in my earlier post.

If it is OEM with a computer such as Dell, Gateway, HP etc and the
motherboard is not from them then you may have problems.
Contact the OEM for details.

Well, I just purchased the OEM Windows XP online to save a few dollars. Ok,
so if everything works fine with the repair installation will I be in the
clear? By saying in the clear I mean will I be able to continue to use the
same Windows XP that is installed on my hard drive and will that be legal?
Thanks again for all the replies.

You should be OK.
It is the same computer even though you have changed some components.

Since it is OEM, the EULA does not allow transferring to a new computer but
this is the same computer and you should be OK as long as you upgrade this
computer instead of completely replace.
