Question about reinstalling XP

I need to reinstall XP. My install CD is an upgrade one. In the past
when it asks for proof of previous system, I've used the floppy disks
from my Windows 3.5 install set. I've misplaced them. All I have is my
Windows 98 upgrade CD. When the XP upgrade install program reads the cd
is it going to ask for an original install disk? If it does, is there a
work around, command line switch or something that tells XP install to
bypass the disk check?

There is no work around / switch that overides the requirement for a
qualifying version
That being said the 98 upgrade should be ok

the best thing to do is to fix the o.s. you have now
with your cd "or"

buy a win95 cd off the internet as it is the last
version that is acceptable for installing the upgrade.

------------------

what I recommend is to simply initiate a clean
boot.

next go to add/remove and uninstall all the third party
software.

you should do the above via safe mode.

this at least will leave you with a bare bones windows
that you would get if you could do a clean install of
windows.

-------------------

afterwards use you cd to initiate a "repair installation"
on the installed o.s.

--------------------

incidentally, can you explain what it the issue you
are experiencing that is enticing you to reinstall
windows.

it may be that even if you could do a clean install
or a repair installation,

it would prove futile - depending on the problem
you have.

I don't think there is a way to skip the verification check

but most any previous version of Windows will work

Your win98 cd should work...

Even if it's an Upgrade CD?

(I guess there's a way to figure it out... :-) )

I need help along this subject. My 2002 gateway desktop had hard drive
meltdown. I bought new hard drive and installed the gateway operating disks.
Now I am asked for the Windows 98 Home Edition disk to be put in the cd
drive. I can not find it anywhere. I have product # and Certificate of
authority number from the case of the tower, but no disk. Please help me with
how I get a Windows 98 Home Edition disk. Thank you

are you sure that the hard drive incurred a
total meltdown - no hope for recovery?

--------------------

I recall having a similar problem many
years ago.

however, since the o.s. was an older
version and a newer os was on the
market,

I simply bought the full retail of the
newer o.s. and canned the old one
that came preinstalled on the computer.

unless your computer is vista ready,
it would be useless to utilize the method
above.
-------------------

unfortunately, I'm not sure how to solve
the issue you have with any assuredness.

it is likely that you have the disks to
initiate a factory restore, but the additional
restoration files may be on the old hard drive.

--------------------

does your product key have the letters "oem"
somewhere in the string of letters and
numbers?

what was the version of the operating
system on the older computer?

perhaps the above is moot, if you don't have
any disks with the tools to fix a dysfunctional
disk system on the old hard drive.

perhaps, if you don't have the resources to
buy a new operating system or the machine
cannot use a new window o.s.

then you might try to install the free o.s.'s
like linux, ubantu or others.

--------------------

another method that might be of help
that pertains to microsoft o.s.'s
can be found here:

:
Is the dealer you got the computer from still in business. Maybe they
can supply one. When you buy a brand name computer from any dealer
where anything on it is pre-loaded always insist on getting copies of
the install disks for the OS and any other applications that are pre-loaded.

I obtained information from another source. In order to pass an upgrade
check you need a full version of a previous Microsoft OS. So my Windows
98SE upgrade disk will not pass muster.
