I currently have xp pro oem installed on my machine, about a year back I had
problems with it and went through the process of swapping out parts to see
what it was. Problem was I hit the "activate" button everytime I changed a
part and reinstalled windows. - the only way to be sure, yes?
I activated because windows wouldn't let me update without it.
So now I get the call-them-to-activate thing, which is partially OK, but
damn annoying. I realize my mistake now, but does it ever go back to
validating without the phone call?

You ran out of 'user activations' on your installation.
By default Windows XP only allows a user to perform a certain amount of
activations, to allow said user to update their system as a part of it's
normal expected lifespan.
You can call Microsoft to receive a new activation free of charge (apart
from phone cost that is), more people have experienced the same problem
where I work and that is how they got around it.

Sometime MS will "question" you in greater details if they feel that
you are re-activating too often.

In view of OP reluctance to call, I would say the too often factor could be small
on the first phone call, but who knows ;)
It would be a good idea at least to state the same reasons he put here if asked on
the phone.
