The Berzerker
Hi. I've recently built a new machine to bring me up to date with some of
the latest games.
P4 Prescott 3Ghz, HT, 1MG cache
ASUS P4S800D
1024MB Dual Channel DDR400Mhz
HIS Radeon 9800 Pro Iceq 128MB
160GB HDD
etc, etc.
My previous machine was 550Mhz, so it's quite a step up.
I've been playing games such as Doom3, and have been getting pretty good
performance... When I last checked the Doom3 timedemo clocked it at 51fps
(High qual, 800x600, v-sync on - unless it auto changes it for the
timedemo), and I'm happy with that. Problem is, I've been trying some of my
older games, such as Postal 2, and Soldier of Fortune 2. The framerates on
these seem pretty set, because no matter what I do, they don't really
change.
For instance, playing SOF2 results in 60fps, but seems to drop to around
40fps, not for any specific reason. No matter what graphical settings I add
to this game, when it drops, in certain areas or whatever, it will always
drop. So I can have the game with every single thing on, and my rez at
1600x1200 with no real difference in performance as I have with 640x480 with
everything on the lowest. This is also true for postal 2, if the fps drop at
max graphics, they still drop at the lowest.
Are these games just bad examples of performance? Bad use of an engine!??! I
have been playing other visually impressive games and had a rock-solid
60fps, I was just wondering about these. Are they renowned for being
stubborn?
Thanks, Chris.
