Julie P.

Hi, sometimes when I paste text from a webpage onto my spreadsheet into one
cell, the pasted text takes over two or more cells. I don't mean the text
just overlaps the cells, but the one cell it was pasted into expands in
width, so that it is larger than any of the other cells in that column. Does
anyone know how to stop this?

Thanks!

Does this happen when you've done a data|text to columns before (any time in the
same excel session)?

If yes, then before you paste, do a dummy data|text to columns.

Put some dummy text in an unused cell.
data|text to columns
delimited, but uncheck each of the delimiters
finish it up
clean up that dummy text in that cell.

Alternatively, you can close excel and reopen it.

(Excel likes to help you by rememembering the settings from the last Data|text
to columns setting you used.)

Julie, after you do the paste, do an Edit, Clear, Formats.

Well, I never knew about that option, or even what it does. I just copy and
paste text or numbers from certain webpages or emails into my spreadsheet.
Sometimes the numbers paste right into the cell, and other times, it takes
over two or more cells and changes the borders!

I will look more into this feature to see what I can learn. Thanks!

I misunderstood the question--I thought that your pasted data actually went into
multiple cells.

no problem David. I should have been more careful in explaining!
