Question about MS copy protected software

PeterM

I have my own original version of a MS software CD that I like to copy. Nero
6 Ultra Edition will not allow me to copy it. :-) Because of copy
protection. So I went on a NG and was told that Clone CD is a good product,
and it will copy my copy protected program. I just can't get the damn thing
to download, every site comes up with a damn error message about not being
authorized to view this page. Besides 4 million pop-ups, and spyware on top
of it. I guess they don't want me to get it. I was looking for a trial
version, and I would not hesitate to buy it if it works one time. Is there
a site where I can get it?. I don't want to do anything illegal etc. About
not being able to copy the MS program, I think it sucks. I paid for it, and
I want a backup copy. Every once in a while I need to stick it in to the CD
drive, and I can't find the damn original. Honestly, no other reason then
that. I'm a senior citizen, I know we can be pretty bad as well, but not
this guy. Any help is appreciated.............Peter

Have you tried here http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonecd.html

In case you are wondering how I found the site I went to www.google.com and
did a search for clonecd

Peter do you have your Popup Blocker turned on? If you have installed
Windows XP SP2 there is a popup blocker in Internet Explorer under the Tools
menu. Also once you have SP2 installed Internet Explorer with prompt you
before it downloads a file. A thin yellow bar will appear at the top of the
webpage you are downloading from. Click the yellow bar if you want to start
a download.

MS does not copy-protect their CDs, that is why they have
Windows Product Activation. I have made copies of MS CD
using Roxio without any problems.

Thanks a bunch Harry, it finally worked w/o a glitch. I appreciate you a
lot. Now the software doesn't sem to read my drive that contains the blank
CD. I tried several of them. I tried, just now, to copy other software, and
it worked. Just this transaction doesn't like to get started. The CD Clone
software keeps saying waiting for the CD or something to be inserted I
guess. I tried several of them, it just doesn't work The size of the files
on the CD is 200 mb or something like that..........Peter

Peter there is no such thing as a -CD or a +CD. There are CD-R and CD-R/W
discs. However the "-" doesn't denote anything other than being there for
spelling purposes to separate the letters "CD" from the letters "R" or
"R/W".

On the other hand the "-" and "+" are important if you are using DVD discs.
But then you need to have a DVD writer as these do not work with a standard
CD Writer. A DVD -R or DVD +R are totally different formats from each other.
While most new DVD Writers can write to either -R or +R media there are
older DVD writers that will only use the format designed for that burner.
For example a DVD-R/DVD-R/W writer will not burn to DVD +R or DVD +R/W
discs. Hope I'm not confusing you too much here :-)

Back to CloneCD. If you are using a DVD disc in a CD Writer, the writer will
not recognize the disc as writeable media. That might be a reason why
CloneCD doesn't like the disc. On the other hand if you have a DVD writer
and using a DVD disc I think you need to use the correct version of CloneCD
which would be CloneDVD http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd.html

CloneDVD is only for copying DVDs and CloneCD is only for copying CDs.

CD Burning in XP can be the pits sometimes. You may wish to check Alex
Nichol's site here and see if anything in the Problem's section fits for you
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm

By the way what specific Microsoft program are you trying to copy. As far as
I know Microsoft doesn't use copy protection on their software.

start clone cd before inserting discs. let clone close the trays. this gets
around the problem of windows seeing cd and any copy protection

Hello again, thanks again to all of you for the help. I hope you don't mind,
I like to keep the "what" to myself. It's a corporate version of a software
that we have permission to use at home, because I work at home as well. The
reason I'm thinking of wanting a copy, because other version of the same
software asked me to insert the CD for an update or something like that.
Since I don't carry the CD with me at all times, I feel kind of "not safe"
So I like a copy in the event I need to insert it for an update. That is the
truth of the matter............ I don't think it is a DVD. Wouldn't it say
on the media, if it is a DVD. Since it is only 200 some MB it doesn't make
sense to waste a DVD on the item. Just my thoughts..........Peter

You have a right to privacy but as I mentioned I don't think that there is
copy protection on MS discs. Nero should work fine. If it doesn't then there
is likely another problem. It could be related to hardware issues, or one of
the problems listed at Alex Nichol's site. If you could supply the exact
message that Nero is reporting I might be able to sort it for you but
without the title of the MS app I can't tell if it is copy protected.

You are correct in that a disc will have DVD or CD written on it.

AFAIK, MS stopped using copy protection back in the days of
WORKS 2.0 DOS. Only the game and movie people use copy
protection. The MS EULA says you may copy the CD for
archival purposes. You just can't copy it to clone your
system. The EULA really applies to the COA/PK that you pay
for. When you buy a new mattress or pillow, there is a tag
that says "Do not remove under penalty of law" but this only
applies to the retailer. Likewise, the hologram label and
such on a CD are to prove to the end-user retail customer
that he is buying a genuine and legal MS product. The
end-user can burn 100 CDs if he/she is paranoid about
earthquakes, fire and flood. These 100 copies will all work
with the original COA/license and can be installed on ONE
computer. If it is a retail version, it can be removed and
installed on a series of computers, one at a time. If it is
an OEM CD from MS, then it can be installed only on the same
computer [which can be upgraded as time passes]. If you
built it yourself, you the builder get to decide when it
isn't an upgrade and becomes a new computer.

Forgive a really dumb question (you were warned), but if you install the
retail version on one computer and then install it on another, how does
the software know?

Good grief! No wonder there are so many "bootleg" copies of MS operating
systems on the planet...this really is onerous... thanks for the info.

I'm not aware of any MS software (OS, Office etc.) that one can't simply
copy like any other cd. If instead, it's a game, then you'll have to go
somewhere else for the info you seek.

What MS software specifically?

Sounds to me more like your system could use a general clean up, e.g.
adware, spyware, virus, keystroke loggers or whatever that may have
accumulated over the years.

I appreciate all you wonderful folks for answering my question. I probably
have something wrong with the hardware, or with my head.To show you how bad
it is, I was able to download Alcohol 120, and I could not figure out how to
copy the disk.......The old man in CA........Peter

I clean my computer every week with ad-aware, Norton AV, trend micro
sometimes, Spybot etc. I better not have a virus or something like that. I
also have Zone Alarm and a ProSafe Firewall Server. I'm going to try my
external burner this weekend, just in case. I mean if I can't copy it the
hell with it, but it still bugs me....Peter
