I'm not sure if this is the proper newsgroup but here
goes. I've installed MS Access 2002 with MS Office
XP/Frontpage. But, when I go to open up an Access db,
Access gives me a Logon screen with my computer name and
asks for the password. I didn't think I created a pw with
my computer name. And no other application has ever asked
for a computer name and pw. I'm running WinXP with latest
patches. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks. RHS

Every session of Access uses a workgroup file. A fresh installation of
Access uses a workgroup called system.mdw, usually located in the windows
system folder. If anyone using your computer implemented security on an
Access database, it may have changed the default workgroup file to the one
they created. If they didn't create a new workgroup file, but used the
existing system.mdw, once they set a password for the Admin user, then it
will prompt for a username/password.

Do a search on your computer for all *.mdw files. If you have more than
one, open Tools, Security, Workgroup Administrator, click Join and choose
the system.mdw file in your windows system folder. If you are already
joined to that workgroup, then someone has set a password on the Admin user.
If that's the case, you should be able to rename that file to system1.mdw;
then just open Access and it'll create a new system.mdw for you.
