Question About Mixing IDE Drive Speeds

Just a quick and hopefully simple question...

I have an Asus P4P800 Delux maotherboard.

If I place an older drive (say ATA66) as slave on the same chain as a
faster drive (say ATA133) will it slow my master drive down?

No, but if you plan to be copying between the two drives a
lot you ought to consider placing them on different IDE
channels. For best performance on ATA, source and
destination drives should not be on same channel (cable).

Not directly.
But the older drive will transfer data at ATA66 speed, so it will
take the bus (marginally) longer occupied.

Nonsense, source and destination is fine.
Double source is the problematic one.

For cache reads and buffer writes.

But doesn't slow the faster drive down. For pure media reads it
doesn't matter (make no difference) as it is the drive's access time
and STR that determines the transfer time, not the interface speed.
Drives of a specific interface speed only transfer sustained at less
than half that interface speed, so they each run unlimited at their
respective interface speeds.

I don't think it will make any difference to the faster drive.

It certainly will if you run (e.g.) a text search on al files on the slower
drive and load a big file from the faster one at the same time.
When seeks take the larger part of the transfer there will not be enough
bandwidth left on the channel for the other drive to run at full speed.
But the same will be true for the reverse situation.

The Master is using its own controller.

Pity that in the times that it actually was a problem they were using their
"own controller"s too. The problem was in the Hostbus controller, not the drive controller(s).
