Question about McAfee software

I'm considering purchasing the McAfee Internet Security Suite, and I
have a question. Will it destroy any viruses and/or spyware that are
already on my system right now, or will it only protect me from these
threats after I install the suite?

I know for a fact that I am infected at this very moment, and I'd like
to get rid of all the junk that is currently present on my system, in
addition to whatever may attack me after I install the suite.

It's possible that the "junk" on your system will turn McAfee into
junk. Use on-line scanners if you must, but get rid of as much malware
as you can before installing McAfee. What version of Windows?

I dual-boot between Windows 98 SE and XP. I'd like to install the
suite in both partitions.

Hmm. The reason I asked is that FAT32 (Win 98) allows for a formal
scan in DOS from a cold boot. But that's not going to do any good on
your NTFS partition which most use with XP. You could use F-Prot for
DOS to scan the Win 98 partition at least. When that's clean you could
install McAfee on Win 98 first. And use it to scan the XP partition.
Check my web site for the F-Pup download. Ideally, you should have
access to a clean Win 98/ME PC to make the emergency disks on.

You could also try the Sys-Up download and scan the drives/partitons
in Safe mode.

I don't like suggesting oh-line scans but you might get lucky. There
are some sites listed here:

Before installing the McAfee you should first do the following:

Download, update and run both of these two programs to clean your system of
any parasites and/or other malware:

SpyBot: Free
http://www.safer-networking.org/
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Adaware: Free
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

You should also retain these two programs, keep them updated, and run them
both at least once a week in addition to your AV software.

Then download and run this free virus scan to be sure your system is free of
any viruses:

Erich-

Go to the McAfee website and download Stinger. I should take care of all
your problems.

It never ceases to amaze me how people get it in their heads that a
utility that can only clean a small handful out of well over100,000
possible malwares "should take care of your problems". Hell, if such a
tool existed, it would cost a fortune.

I have had no problem with it except when cleaning up error condition. It
does it's own thing
