Steven Smith

Well, my question is regarding Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. I'm running on
Windows XP Home, and whenever I go to a website and want to save a
particular picture on a website onto my computer by right clicking on it and
picking "Save Picture As..." and as soon as I right click and choose the
"Save" button, I notice that the Internet Explorer browser itself freezes
for a good 25 - 30 seconds, and it has nothing to do with the image size,
since I am on a broadband cable connection. This problem has recently
started and I am not sure what may be causing this "freeze". Others have
suggested that I clear my Temporary Internet Files, which I have done also.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hello PA,

I have also done the "Disk Error Checking", as well as the Disk Defragment"
and I am still having the same problem. :( Any other possible solutions?

Now that you've ruled out TIF, have you run Check Disk and Defrag lately?

I suspect some third-party application (knowingly or unknowingly installed)
is at the root of your problem, as prompted by "This problem has recently
started...what may be causing this 'freeze'...."

IE "freezing"

....which itself asks you to consider

Parasites

(AdAware, Spybot, BHO Cop)

NB: RTFM (especially with Spybot) and always seek updates to each
application's reference files before each use.

I do casual scans of my computer for spyware using Ad-Aware 6.0 and always
keep up-to-date with the updates, since I purchased the full version from
the website. And, as the website has mentioned, I have deleted all
unrecognized objects from Tools | General Tab | Settings button | View
Objects.

I also downloaded BHODemon and I see that the only thing is listed are 2
things, one is from Adobe Acrobat Reader, and the other is from Norton Anti
Virus 2003 Professional, which I both had for a while now way before the
actual problem ever started.

I'm not sure I have an ATI card, but I doubt it, because my computer is
pretty new and was only purchased early this year. I have the NVIDIA
GeForce4 MX 420 with TV Out (64MB DDR).

I'm still having the same problem :( It only happens when I am saving
images from the web -- I can go to "Save Target As.." or right click and go
to Properties or View Source or whatever, and all work fine, but when I save
images, IE just hangs for 25 - 45 seconds.

Anymore suggestions?

I really appreciate your help!

Sorry for the double reply, but also, on the website where it says: "//IE6
SP1 - IE may stop responding (hang) - images may not appear as expected and
status bar says "items remaining" or "done"\\" -- I do not experience that.
All images load up fine with no other problems except for the "hang" when I
actually save images from the web.

Spybot has been known to identify parasites not nailed by AdAware and BHO
Cop. YMMV.

It may be worth your while to consider some of the other things listed on
Sandi's page (http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers3.htm#freezing; scroll
down).

Your problem *may* be related to the much-discussed (today, especially; see
"An Open Letter to..." ) problem addressed, somewhat, in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=235589.

If 'Save target as...' works for you, do it that way, then see if you can
save the pic itself from that saved file using 'Save Picture as...'.

Hello again PA,

I ran SpyBot - Search and Destroy and saw that it detected some problems,
but I wasn't sure how to use it, and its weird because it detected files in
MS Media Player and in MS Office, which I don't think I have anything to
worry about. I heard from previous users that SpyBot have made some of
their programs stop working.

As for "Save Target As.." , if I was to save the website I want with the
picture in it and than open up that HTML file up in Internet Explorer thats
already saved on my hard drive and pick "Save Picture As...", it still gives
me that hang for 25 - 30 seconds.

The problem addressed in the knowledge database article that you've posted
isn't really my problem, since I can save websites without a problem...my
problem is the hang that IE does for 25 - 30 seconds each time I save a
picture through IE using "Save Picture As...".

It only happens in IE, because when I tried doing the same thing thru
Netscape Navigator 7.0, all worked without a problem. But because I prefer
using IE over Netscape, I really want the problem to be fixed, if there is
any sort of solution to it. The last thing I want to do is format for a
simple problem like this, because I had hanging problems in the past with
Outlook Express, which was fixed thanks to someone posting a website to
where I had to make a quick modification to my system registry.

I'm clueless at this point. Is there anything else that you can suggest?

I really thank you for all of your help thus far.

Again...

e.g., corrupt cache (delete related folders)

Also see if this helps at all (unlikely):

IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck and reboot).

Other than that, I'm afraid I have nothing more to offer you. Suggest
posting instead to
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general in case the
folks there (Kelly, for one) have something more to offer you. While you're
having the problem saving from a web-page, I suspect something in your OS is
amiss and while Windows does indeed depend heavily on the IE shell, they may
be better able to help you there.

Tell us if the graphics you are saving are cached (Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V)
and if your symptom changes if you set Work Offline (Alt-F,W)
before trying to do the save.

I saw a little circle with a little line going thru it,
so I'm assuming thats the symbol for work offline.

Yes... That's the symbol which tells you that the link associated
with that graphic is not available in Working Offline mode.
E.g. either you haven't visited that site yet or if you did its page wasn't
cached. Now, if the image file for the graphic is cached, instead
of having to access to web when you try to save it with Save Picture As...
it will be copied from your TIF. Provided the page was cached and
available offline you could test whether its graphics were available offline
by either cloning the window (e.g by pressing Ctrl-N) or by loading
About:Blank over the page and then going back to it. (Don't press Refresh
or you are committing yourself to another web access.)

So if you are seeing the same symptom doing that as you were seeing
when you were having to access the web we have pointed the probable
cause away from anything to do with the network and more to some
problem with your file system, perhaps just your TIF in particular.

In case it is just a case of a corrupted index.dat in your TIF
you can find instructions for deleting the entire TIF folder
(thus deleting its index.dat file as well) in posts by Mike Burgess
which contain the string delcache. Usually it is posted at least
once a month.

E.g. in OE while browsing this newsgroup do the following:
press Ctrl-Shift-F,Alt-r
type Mike Burgess
press Alt-a
type delcache
press Alt-c,F4,CursorUp (x 4),Enter (x 2)

I'm surprised; apparently it has been almost 3 weeks since he posted
that information. If your cache isn't that big do the equivalent search
with Google Groups:
delcache author:burgess group:microsoft.*.ie6.browser

Good luck

Robert

You can use very handy utility to easily save pics in IE, it is called
Incredible Automatic Downloader. This utility downloads pics very
quicky and can retrieve ones that are already in the cache. And you
don't have to deal with filename dialog and context menus.

More info about it: http://www.unhsolutions.net/IAD/
