Question about Forest Naming

Currently we have a domain, let say it name 123.com and we just acquired
another company called abc.com we plan to merge the two network into a new
one. We were thinking of calling the forest ZYX.local, but I was wondering
if it is possible for the NETBIOS names to be different. For instance call
it 123a.com and abc1.com. I was wondering based on their OU could we name
it something else so that NETBIOS will resolve to that name? TIA

If I'm understanding the question, you want to know if you can have
different domain suffixes in the same forest?

Yes. you can for instance have the forest root named 123.net and a
child domain named 123.com.

They must have unique netbios names. for example "123-root" and "123".
While it works just fine, you'll find some frustration in some dialogs
that list domain names. They will list both 123.net and 123.com as
simply "123"

If the question is can you spice/prune/graft the two existing domains
into a new third domain. I don't think so.

W2k3 has a domain rename tool that does some pruning grafting, but I
believe it is limited to the same forest. and requires the highest
forest functional level.

And seriously, the domain rename tool scares the bejezus out of me. I
used it in a lab, but never in production.

Not that I am aware of. But also you want to avoid a 5-letter TLD due to
possible compatibility reasons. Stay with 3-letter TLDs,...such as ".loc"
instead of ".local"

You CAN name the DNS Domain names (not really the forest*)
differently from the NetBIOS name of that domain -- but don't
do that unless you have NO choice.

Use the LeftMost (or main) label of the DNS domain name
as the NetBIOS domain name.

You will NOT be using a "."-dotted name for the NetBIOS
name -- it will be a single label (non-hierarchical) name such
as "123a" or "abc1" but without the .com or other suffix.

*The forest gets its name from the FIRST domain installed, i.e.,
the Root Forest Domain name.
I was wondering based on their OU could we name it something else so that
NETBIOS will resolve to that name? TIA

No. OUs are subcontainers WITHIN a single domain.

The domain has a name and this should NEVER overlap
with any OU, Computer, or User name within that domain
(although some of these are technical possibilities.)

You will merely cause problem that are trivially avoided.

Keep it simple; keep it standard.

Some non-MS OS's have a problem with TLDs that are more than 3 letters. The
Mac OS prior to OSX-10 would not handle it for example.

I did in my (direct) response to you.

Separately I asked Phillip a followup on part of the advice
that he also gave you.
