Epson Perfection 3170

(1) What do you think about it ? I've read the reviews, some like it, some
don't.

(2) Is the Epson Perfection 3170 PHOTO a different scanner from the Epson
Perfection 3170 (without the word PHOTO) ?

I have one and I like it. I have done prints and B/W negatives with
great success. I some respects it has worked better than my dedicated
35mm scanner (Minolta Scan Dual II) in that the light source must be a
bit softer. I did have some 35mm negatives which had been misprocessed
and had reticulation (sort of alligator crazing) on them. The Minolta
did pick up every error of that crazing which said something for its
quality, but when I rescanned them on the 3170, it was perfectly
usable. I made some glorious prints from medium format B/Ws. I have
only tried it in a very limited fashion in color negs, but there seems
to be no problem. I have yet to try 35mm slides as I do those on the
Minolta.
I had hoped to use it for Linux, but as of yet haven't done it. Other
Epsons are supposed to work fine on Linux, but the 3170 is different
from other Epsons. I understand that it is now possible to get drivers
for the 3170 and Linux, but I have yet to do this.

Probably just the box it came in.

I am also looking at the Epson 3170 as an option, but am wondering if it
does slides well. Does anyone have experience with this? I don't have the
money to get a dedicated slide scanner so am looking for a general - purpose
flatbed scanner that also does slides and pictures. Also - does anyone have
links to good reviews? Thanks all.

Hi, I don't think that 3170 does slides well, as probably many other
people think too. Check this thread for example:

For 3170's price you may better look for used film scanner and get a
superior
quality.

Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks, but I need a flatbed scanner for other purposes and am not prepared
to also get a dedicated slide/film scanner. Instead of the 3170, I am going
to be looking at the new Epson 4180, so wonder if that would be better?
