Question about DVD burner speed designation.

Most of the DVD burners that I see are either 2X or 4X. Are they the same 2X/4X as the
CD-R's? A 4X CD-R burner takes a while to burn a 650 mb disc, so if a DVD (4 GB?) is
being burned at 4X wouldn't that take forever and a day? Obviously I have never burned a
DVD before, please enlighten me. Thanks

Howdy!

Well, yes, and no.

It takes about an hour to write a CD at 1x, and it takes right at an
hour to write a DVD at 1x.

4x is 4x that speed, of course.

Consider the difference between Mach 2 and Warp 2 ... <B-)

I see, thanks!

No: CD-R burn rates are no where near as fast as DVD burn rates. You are
comparing apples and oranges.

I may be wrong, but as far as I know, a CD burner's speed is based on how
much it is burning. Say it is burning 60 minutes of music. A 1x CD-RW will
burn it in 60 min. A 30x will burn it in 2 min. I'm assuming that a DVD
burner is based on the same principle. Although it doesn't burn music CDs
(some can), it simply burns at N times as fast as it can play the data. Hope
that's right...
