question about cd burner

I've never had a cd burner before...however, I have one on this new system. Yes, I'm a little behind the times. Anyhow, before I contact Dell, which usually takes about two hours to have one question answered, I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. When I load a cd to either play or burn, my cd burner (which is a generic dell) sounds like it's getting ready to take off...oddest sound. It whirs up, then whirs down, then whirs up again, then whirs down, then whirs up again before it finally does something (ie. the "what do I want to do" window pops up"). Is this normal? Please say yes because I'm dreading having to call Dell again.

Yes, it is normal. There, now do you feel better? Does it actually work?
If it does work I wouldn't get too concerned. My Cendyne Lightning II CD-RW
drive makes those whirring noises as the drive gets the disk up to speed,
which, by the way, is quite fast, before I tell my Nero software to do
something. If it starts to do this all the time, I would give Dell a call.
Before your warranty runs out. Check the fine print for the exact date of
your warranty experation.

That sound of a jet taking off is normal. Up and down.

Not nearly as much as Dell is dreading the possibility,
I'll bet.

Yes, that is normal - but can be worse with certain disks because of poor
quality (in other words, some disks are more unbalanced - like me - than
others). Also, when you insert a disk, make sure it is laying flat. It is
possible to insert a disk incorrectly. Finally, never manually close a CD
drive door. Always use the push button. Manually closing the door can damage
the mechanism.

Speaking of using the push button, if you push the button to eject a disk,
and you have just finished burning it, expect a delay before the disk
ejects - because your system will be going through some close out
procedures.
