Question about borders

When I click on one of the "borders" choices (e.g., "all borders), and then
choose a line style, my mouse icon turns into a pen, as if Excel is
expecting me to draw something. I get rid of the pen by double clicking on
some random cell. What is the pen for?

If you're using xl2003 or older:
Click on Tools|View|toolbars
and show Borders.

Then click on the leftmost icon on that toolbar.

You can draw the border you like.

(Is that the pen that you're seeing???)

I'm running 2007. The icon I'm using is the bottom left in the "font"
group. I click "all borders" within that and then I click "line style"
Then sometimes the cell that I had previously selected gets the border in
that style.... and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the next cell I click
gets it. And sometimes after clicking the line style I want I get the
pen.... and sometimes I don't.

Maybe someone who's using xl2007 will chime in.
