I am learning software programs for web design and ran
into a slight problem with one of my books it tells me to
delete the Preferences file for Adobe Illustrator. It
says it should be under Documents &
Settings/Username/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe
Illustrator. It isn't there and I am not sure whether
me not locating it will effect the use of the Lessons.
Can you tell me why I can't find it? Is is something
that may not have been created yet, because I haven't
really used Illustrator yet.

Asking Adobe sounds like a good idea, but I'll make a guess.
"Username" in that path should be replaced by the user id that you use
to log on, i.e. if the userid that you are logged on as is "surfer",
try C:\Documents and Settings\surfer\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
Illustrator.
