Check your volume control panel. You should have a microphone level on the
panel. Check that is not muted. There is also an "advanced" tab. On that
tab there is a box for "microphone boost" and "front panel microphone".
Check those settings. Do the treble and bass sliders seem to work?

On the volume control panel, on the options tab, select "advanced controls".
There is also a properties control (under options). Here you select the
items to be displayed on the main panel. Select "microphone" for sure, and
any others you may need. Also see that adjust volume for
"recording/playback" meets your needs.

I feel that your mike may be muted, or the incorrect mixer device for
recording is selected. Often it is a box on some obscure and insignificant
hidden panel somewhere that causes all these problems.

about a win98 multimedia pc. Microphone recording does not play back
although the sound track recording panel shows the bar moving and completing
both in recording and playback. But I am able to hear music files such as
mp3 when played via real player or jukebox without hassle. The same mike was
tried on another pc and it records and plays back ok on that pc.

Am I missing out on any settings or does the sound card need replacement (is
it that the mike port on the sound card has gone faulty).

any one with ideas .. many thanks.
Check your audio control settings for recording and
playback, make sure everything is 'checked' (apart from mute).
Also check mic is plugged in the right hole.

Check the volume setting for microphone in control panel, audio devices and
see if you can find volume control for the microhpone. Some soundcards even
have a separate software mixer control for controlling line in, line out,
mic, and you have to check which one you want to use so there might be some
volume control that is not turned up.

You should look a the audio settings for microphone as somtimes the volume
will not be turned up. Look in the properties of the volume settings for
Windows to see if the microphone is checked and if not check it and set the
volume the way you want.
