"Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I've been trying to figure this out for a full day now. I have no problem
opening up existing databases and creating new ones. I can link, create,
and view tables. I can run queries, but one I try to go into the 'Design
View' and add my table(s) I get the error and am forced out.

I've compacted and repaired databases multiple times. Created new databases
with new tables to test. Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted,
applied service packs, rebooting and put on all the latest goodies such as
MDAC, and Jet 4.0 SP8.

I've run out of ideas, need help. Anyone here seen this before?

The setup is Windows XP Pro SP1, Access 2002/XP SP3.

Thanks for any insight!

Hi Simon,

Do you have Name AutoCorrect turned off
in Tools/Options/General?

Hi Simon,

I don't know....

I used to get the same error (Win2K/AccessXP)
which went away with SP3.

-you are not using non-US version?
-you are not using a Tablet PC?
-you are not using Norton Office PlugIn?
-you are not using Adobe PDFMaker PlugIn?
-improperly typed SQL would shut down Access
when you went into Design View I believe
-you are changing "Auto" to "None" for table
property SubDatasheets

How are you updating to SP3?

Did you go to the MS update site and have it figure
out what you need? One thought was that you
were using the same downloaded SP3 to perform
your update and something is wrong with it.

I know my attempts to install SP3 on SQL Server
kept "failing" with original download, then went back
to site and found SP3a which worked.

Another thought was that some critical dll just is not
being updated.

According to

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=836030

XP SP3 was supposed to fix this:

"You receive the following Access 2002 error message:

Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.
To see what data this error report contains, click here.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature
that is similar to one of the following error signatures:
App Name App Version Module Name Module Version offset
------------------------------------------------------------------------
msaccess.exe 10.0.2627.1 msctf.dll 5.1.2409.7 0001ccb5

Additionally, other program versions, module versions, and offsets are possible."

According to

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=832671

"How to determine whether the update is installed
The update contains updated versions of the following files:
File name Version
--------------------------
Excel.exe 10.0.6501.0
Frontpg.exe 10.0.6308.0
Msaccess.exe 10.0.6501.0
Mspub.exe 10.0.6308.0
Outlook.exe 10.0.6626.0
Powerpnt.exe 10.0.6501.0
Winword.exe 10.0.6612.0

To determine the version of your Microsoft Office program that is installed on your
computer, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may
be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to
complete these steps.
Click Start, and then click Search.
In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
In the All or part of the file name box, type the file name of the program executable
that is listed above (for example, type Excel.exe), and then click Search.
In the list of files, right-click the program executable file that was found, and
then click Properties.
On the Version tab, determine the version of your Office program that is installed on
your computer."

It doesn't list versions of all the other critical dll's that possibly should
have been changed though.

If I were to simply open NorthWind sample
db, go into query view, and get the error,
I would first think "Access install is bad."
If I then uninstalled, reinstalled, and got
same result, I would first think something
did not get fully uninstalled, and reinstall did
not "make it go away."

You might go to

http://www.sysinternals.com

and download their free progs that
help you see what is going on in the
background.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help,

Long shot...

Did you try running Detect and Repair of your Office XP install
as described here:

In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change.
Click Repair Office - Restore your Microsoft Office XP installation to its original
state, and then click Next.
Click Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Install.

following steps
may program installed

I resolved the issue by:

1. Uninstalling Office, reboot
2. Downloading and running the "Office Clean-up Wizard" from the Office
Resource Toolkit, reboot
3. Manually searching and clearing out any references to Office in the
registry, reboot
4. Reinstalled Office, reboot

Thanks for the effort Gary.
