Have just upgraded my pc inc. Xp but it now won't install Quake II what gives - is there a cure?

I tried a google search for this problem and the results are mixed. Here's
what I learned:

1.) Several posts mentioned this is not a problem with the recent Quake
bundle that came out featuring Quake 1, 2, plus expansion packs. This seems
to be limited to the original Quake 2 release.
2.) Two users reported success copying the install over from another
computer. One of them suggested copying the install folder and cd to the
computer's hard drive and installing from there.
3.) Verify you have the Windows XP Application Compatiability patches from
Windows Update. One user reported the problem went away after then
installed the patch.

try this, used this to help my install

from alt.games.quake2

Q2 -or- a Mission Pack won't install properly! What do I do?
Check the Regional Settings (Control Panel/Regional Settings applet) in
Windows and make sure the setting on the Regional Settings tab is the same
as the version of Q2 (or mission pack) you're trying to install. For
instance, an English (United States) version of Q2 may not allow you to
install it on a machine with the Regional Settings set to English (United
Kingdom). In that case temporarily change your settings to match your
version of Q2 or mission pack.

-or-
Quake2: Forget about Activision's installer and just install the game
manually. Make a directory called "quake2" and under it make another called
"baseq2". Go to the \Install\Data\baseq2 directory of your Q2 CD and copy
the large "pak0.pak" file, the "gamex86.dll" file, and the \players
directory over to your \quake2\baseq2 directory. Then, go to the
\Install\Data directory of the CD and copy "quake2.exe" and the four ".dll"
files over to your \quake2 directory. Double-click on "quake2.exe" to start
the game or make a shortcut with "c:\games\quake2\quake2.exe" in the
"Target:" field. Note: You can also append a "+" to that command line in
order to start Quake2 with it's console pulled down instead of having to sit
through it's opening movie sequence and demo.

The Reckoning: Pretty much the same as the Quake2 instructions. Make a
directory under your \quake2 directory called "xatrix". Go to the \Data\all
directory of the CD and copy "gamex86.dll" and "pak0.pak" over to your
\quake2\xatrix directory. Pull up a DOS prompt and type: "cd \games\quake2"
then "quake2 +game xatrix" -or- make a shortcut with
"c:\games\quake2\quake2.exe +game xatrix" in the "Target:" field.

Ground Zero: Pretty much the same as the Xatrix instructions. Make a
directory under your \quake2 directory called "rogue". Go to the \Data\all
directory of the CD and copy "gamex86.dll" and "pak0.pak" over to your
\quake2\rogue directory. Pull up a DOS prompt and type: "cd \games\quake2"
then "quake2 +game rogue" -or- make a shortcut with
"c:\games\quake2\quake2.exe +game rogue" in the "Target:" field.

It's important that you install the Quake2 3.20 upgrade patch after
installing Quake2, The Reckoning, Ground Zero, or any other third party mod
that affects the original Quake2 files. The Quake2 3.20 upgrade patch
provides updated .dlls and male, female, cyborg, and crakhor weapon models
for the two mission packs as well as updating the CTF files.
