When I boot up I get an error:
3ac: qttask.exe - No Disk.
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk
into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR7

I don't know where to start. My CD-ROM drives no longer
appear under My Computer. I've reinstalled drivers.
Doesn't help. I can't install Windows 2000 over the top
because the CD-ROM drive doesn't work, so I can't get to
an installation.

Any hints where I can start?

Ayup. Download startup.cpl and disable q(Quick)t(Time)task.exe from
starting up at bootup. I trust you don't need Quicktime phoning home
everytime you bootup. While you're at it, see what other extraneous
crap is loading each time you boot.
Then run Adaware to make sure you're not loading up more spyware.
When all this is cut out, do and run M$ Regclean 4.1a to clean out
your registry.
A good free virus scanner would do wonders.
This might fix it. If it doesn't then post the next problems in here
and we'll go from there.
If it does fix it, dl and run a free firewall like Zone Alarm which
will show you when spyware is trying to phone home.
