I've downloaded the October 28, 2005 QFE for SP2 and found an .img file.
How do I install the QFE?

Hi,

you would need the Desktop QFE installer component, in order to install this
to XPE, if it's a Windows XP Professional QFE... if it's a Component Patch,
you would need to extract the img file, and apply Component updates...

if you poke in the google archives, you will see programs that will extract
..img files.

JC

I feel like I'm missing something crucial in this discussion.

"JC" says "you would need the Desktop QFE installer component, in order to
install this to XPE, if it's a Windows XP Professional QFE... if it's a
Component Patch, you would need to extract the img file, and apply Component
updates...". But how do you know which it is ?

"MS" says "Use Magic ISO program to extract the exe file from img". But how
do you know there's an exe file inside the img ?

All the other SP2 QFEs (Aug 31 2005, July 13 2005, etc.) provide an
executable and some RTF instructions. Then the QFE of Oct 28 2005 provides a
".img" file instead - and no instructions whatsoever. So how do you know
what you're supposed to do with it ?

Thanks
Jack

Göran,

- Rename the extension from ".img" to ".iso"
- Burn the image to a CD-ROM (for example with NERO)
- When you have Target Designer SP2 install the file
Windows\WindowsXPEmbedded_SP2\X86\ENU\WindowsXPESP2-October2005-x86-ENU.exe

best regards,
Peter
P.S.: A little bit confusing steps. I would be happy, when Microsoft changes
to the old procedure for the next KB updates...? :-)

I have used Magic ISO utility. Install this utility and open the img file
using this utility after launching.

You do not have to write to CD, once you launch the img file, you will see
the exe file inside. Just drag the file on your desktop.

I have that file and used t he same method and it works.
