I accidentally downloaded a firewall onto my laptop that
connects to a server through a VPN. I understand there
are issues with this firewall and the VPN connnection but
I tried to uninstall the software to remove as soon as I
discovered my mistake and there is no uninstall feature.
How did I remove this from my machine.

Assuming that there is no entry on the add/remove software list and there is
no uninstall option on the start menu, I would try the following:
Look for an uninstall option in the program directory
Contact the software vendor for uninstall instructions
Manually remove the program by deleting the program directory, registry
entries, and any other references to the program. Hopefully one of the
first two options will prove fruitful.

Hope this helps,

When you say "I accidentally downloaded a firewall", does that mean the
piece of software referenced in your subject header?

This isn't a firewall, it is a security patch for XP which you need. You
would be better served by applying SP1 to your XP machine, which includes
this patch.

If you need to back this out, go to Start, all programs, accessories, system
tools, and click System Restore.

You should be able to restore your system to a restore point created before
the patch was applied.
