This forum advised me to get an ip8500 to replace the dead S540 printer. I
went to several local stores to purchase an ip8500.
I hardly saw Canon ink printers in the stores except for i6600D model but
there were tons of HP printers. I wonder why.
Are Canon printers that popular? I found that ip8550 were available from
a few on-line stores. My concern is whether i8500 is chipped or not. If
chipped, then refilling with third party inks becomes a problem. I would
rather go for a Canon printer which I can use non-OEM inks too. Please
advise me which Cannon printer. Craig

YOU WERE ADVISED INCORRECTLY. THE ORIGINAL (ALMOST THE SAME ENGINE) FOR
A LITTLE MORE IS THE CANON I9900. IF YOU WANT A PURE PHOTO PRINTER THAT
CAN PRINT ENLARGEMENTS UP TO 13X19 FOR FRAMING, THIS IS A BETTER BUY FOR
A FEW BUCKS MORE.

THE ONLY REASON FOR AN IP8500 IS IF YOU NEED TO USE IT FOR BUSINESS
DOCUMENTS AS WELL AND KNOW THAT THE LARGEST PHOTO YOU WILL EVER WANT TO
PRINT IS 8.5X11.

REFILLING WITH AFTERMARKET INKS IS A PROBLEM WITH ANY PRINTER. IF YOU
ARE BENT FOR REFILLING THAN GET THE CHEAPEST LEXMARK PRINTER YOU CAN FIND.

I believe it uses (8?) BCI-6/BCI-3e type cartridges, no? I use these in
my i860, iP4000 and iP5000 (but only 5 cartridges) and they're the
easiest to refill - and chipless. Ignore any information on refilling
from the troll. Unless you're the clumsiest fool on earth, it's totally
mess free. The troll's never refilled anything so he just lies.

NEVER RISK SUCH AN EXPENSIVE PRINTER TO CLOGGING WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT
YOU ARE BUYING AND HAVE A VERY VERY HEAVY PRINT LOAD.

The first thing I did when I bought the iP5000, which had the smallest
inkjet nozzles (best chance to clog) in the industry at the time, was to
install non-Canon cartridges and a bulk-filled black cartridge. Clogs
are nonexistent and the printer is only rarely used. The troll lies
through his teeth about "VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY
VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY" heavy print load that one
must have in order to keep non-Canon inks from clogging. That's absolute
nonsense. If I had to print hundreds of pages a week for each of my
printers in order to avoid clogs, I'd long returned to using Canon inks.
Obviously I haven't as there never has been any such problem as the
troll Measekite outlines, and I monitor this group on a daily basis.
About 20% of printer owners use compatibles inks. If clogging was an
issue there'd be hundreds of people here crying for help. As we all have
seen, there is no difference in the number of reports between genuine
and compatible ink users. Actually, to be honest, there are hundreds of
reports daily about the problems of using compatible inks, but they're
all - and I mean all - coming from the troll Measekite, who strangely,
yes, wait for it . . . HAS NEVER USED compatible inks. Think about
that for a while . . .

A guess... canon in September changed printers, from the
ip3000/ip4000/ip5000 to the ip4200/5200, the ip6000 to the ip6600,
etc... etc... Stores that I knew which carried these printers might
not have them. The new printers take new ink cartridges, so I would
guess the stores are waiting till they get everything in to support the
printers.

Rule of thumb is not to listen to measkite.

The ip8500 and i9900 are spiffy printers. One might also consider the
ip6600, but if refilling is your bag, the ip8500 and i9900 are already
supported. the ip6600 can be refilled but no aftermarket cartridges
exist. I would strongly reccomend going into a shop that has the
ip6600D with a digital camera and test the prints for your self, vs a
ip8500 which you can also find in stores. The ip6600 has smaller
inkdrops but not the extra two colors, where the higher end printers
have larger drops but the extra colors.

The pixma mp900/mp950 is an all in one with both the dye inks and a
pigmented black. US and Europe don't get the Japanese ip7500 model
with those features.

1 - printer is not expensive, it is the ink
2 - even if printer clogs after 5 refills, it's cheaper to buy a new
printer

Your advice is very expensive. What graduate school did you go to?
University of Analus Cloggus?

Exactly. Taliesyn knows exactly what he is buying/doing, and has direct
experience in it not clogging.

HE NEEDS TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL AND LEARN WHAT THINGS ARE ALL ABOUT.
HE THEN NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND BUSINESS INSTEAD OF JUST PINCHING HIS ALLOWANCE.

That is the essence of newsgroups and the internet. If you don't want a
response then you should leave the newsgroup.

AND IT
IS TRUE THAT HE HAS NOT GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL.
I have not seen that evidence. I'm sure you can cite the admission
somewhere to prove your point, otherwise it is irrelevant.

IT IS TRUE THAT HE IS
PINCHING PENNIES.
Frugality can be a good thing. Not all of us want to pour our money into
ink cartridges.

Measkite said: "If you do not agree with what I say then do not send a response"

You see, that's the problem. You don't believe that people are
intitled to their own opinion.. anyone who disagrees with you must be
stupid. You employ harassment to anyone who's views differ from yours
and this is wrong.

I for example am willing to accept that OEM ink might offer something
better than what I buy. And I'm even for people in this group to point
out when OEM might be a good choice. But that's the thing... it's a
choice.

But with all due respect, if you disagree with them one, it would be
ultra spiffy of you to refrain from giving out the verbal herpies and
actually use your experence and your BA from Stanford and actually make
a point. You go on and on about how others are not very educated...
and how you are a Stanford grad but nothing in your posts reflect that
you have any background in business, or printing, or even using your
printer at all. If you disagree with someone, by all means disagree,
don't go into lunitic jarhead mode... use what you know to add
something to the thread so others can make up their own minds and find
their own truth.

I am zakezuke, and I, with the upmost respect.... disagree with you.
