Hi all,

I have a ADSL modem connected to a Sitecom DC207 router which in turn is
connected to 3 PC's, one of which is old, turned on 24/7, and mostly used
for downloading stuff. At times it rather hogs the internet connection,
slowing down the connection the other PC's can make substantially. Can
anyone suggest a way to limit the share this machine gets of the total
internet connection? The downloading software in question does not offer a
possibility to limit it's downloading efort to a certain amount. Is there
perhaps a way to squeeze the relevant LAN port on the router?

Any ideas deeply appreciated,

thanks,

Bob

Not really.
Try restricting the port on the router to 10Mb (and/or opening the
others up to 100Mb. It may not totally solve it, but it is a place to
start. Just make sure that client has its speed set to autonegotiate or
is matched to the router setting.

Beautiful it isnt.

I tought of that,... sorta...

I considered suggesting placing a 10mbps Switch "inline" next to the machine
so they had to go through it to get there. But I thought it might be a
rather "cheezy" solution. Putting a 10mbps Nic in the machine could be
another option.

However even 10bps is enough to choke up a DSL line, it is still at least 5
times faster than even a 2mbps DSL line. The DSL line is still the slowest
link in the chain, so the restriction would have to be there and would have
to have a way to restrict to maybe 256k or something like that. I don't know
of anything that would accomplish that.
