Puzzling problem

I decided to upgrade my machine to an Athlon 2800+ XP with a Gigabyte GA
7N400 PRO. I also purchased 512MB of RAM which is rated at 400MHz
compatable.

I also have a DVDR and a CDRW and 3 Hard disks (40gb).

Anyway on with the problem..

When I attach both the DVDR and the CDRW (whether on the same IDE cable
or not) the machine 'ON' switch no longer works, I get a very brief
flash from both the power light on the drivers and the main power.

If I disconnect either it boots.

Also, I set the bus speed to 200mhz and it locked up, but it boots at
166mhz.

What am I doing wrong? I thought the bus could be at 200mhz for the
DDRAM to work at 400mhz (x2 see).

Please give me a few pointers!

Is your power supply up to the job? Will the PC boot with both optical
drives connected and one HDD disconnected?
I've got a GA 7NNXP here running 3 optical drives and three HDD's no problem
on a 450w Enermax

When you say you set the bus speed to 200Mhz, was this the memory speed or
CPU FSB? If its the CPU FSB, you are trying to overclock your XP2800 (166Mhz
FSB), which it probably doesn't like much.

Thank you for your help...

I discounted this because I was using exactly the same setup as before
(with no problems) only with a different Mobo and CPU (Athlon 1200).

Would the power supply cause these sort of symptoms then? I will try
that in the morning.

Ahhh!!! I am stupido. I cant believe I confused the two.

I does... Thanks

could very well do - if it cant supply the voltage then the mobo cant start
up. electrical components are much like a car fuel consuption. the startup
procedure takes alot more juice than it does when running. this is probably
where your PSU is struggling - it cant cope with the peak startup voltage.

before rushing out to get a new PSU though, try different drive
combinations. see if there is 1 specific drive that is the problem. if it
happens if you either have all ur HDD's connected, and 1 cd drive
disconnected, AND with all cd drives connected, and 1hdd disconnected then
i`d guess at weak PSU.

what wattage if your psu?
