Putting Your Computer on Hiberation or Stand-by

Hello, I bought a new keyboard that has a sleep button. I've always wanted to
use this feature but what I wanted to know is this: If you have an always on
connection to the internet and I press the sleep button to put the computer
into hiberation, is the computer still safe from internet threats? I use an
anti-virus product and a good firewall and anti-spyware that I keep updated
and all, but I've never used the hibernation feature. Also, which is better:
putting your computer on stand-by or hibernation? I usually was just turning
my computer on in the morning and off in the evening even if I wasn't using
it that often.

Thanks for any advice,
Jan

When the computer hibernates, it writes the contents of its RAM memory to the
hyberfile.sys file on the HD and COMPLETELY shuts down (turns the power off).
So yes, it's completely invunerable to attack.

Standby puts the computer in a low power mode; it's still on but not
operating.

Hibernate uses less power (zero), you can unplug or disconnect the power
without fear of data loss.

Going into/out of Standby is faster, but it uses more power, and if the
computer loses power, the contents of memory is lost and any unsaved data
will be lost.

For me, hybernate is the cat's meow! :-) You turn it on in the AM and 30sec
later you are right where you left off last night! You can also configure it
to automatically hibernate after so much time so if you forget, it'll tuck
itself in and have a nice nap.

However, one caveat: your hardware and software has to support it, most
newer stuff will.
