just got a new Dell with XP, and I want to throw my existing win98 drive in
there too, and choose which operating system to use at startup. I have found
instructions for running two operating systems, but they don't address what
to do if both drives already have the operating systems installed. I know I
will have to reconfigure all the hardware setting and drivers on the 98
drive. I just want to know if there is anything special I should consider
when attempting this.

Assuming you have 2 CD-ROM drives, I would set it up like so -

Set both drives to CS (Cable Select).

IDE 1 cable intermediate connector to HDD2 (W98), END connector to HDD1
(XP), IDE 2 to DVD & R-R/W drives, set both to Cable Select. This ensures
the XP drive becomes the prime drive.

Always try to use 80-wire (ATA66) ribbon. (ATA66 runs at 80 to 133MBs data
transfer, 40-wire runs at 33MBs.)

If disconnecting one drive for testing, make sure END OF CABLE is plugged in
to active drive.

BIOS -
Do not auto-detect. Settings for HDD1, 2 should be manually set to AUTO.
