putting a pasword on external harddrive

dont need somthing that harsh, the people using my computer wont be able to
get around a password, nevermind encryption.

Try Googling "password protect drive" or something similar.

Technically - anyone who is a system admin on a computer you connect that
drive to can get around this - but you could format it with NTFS and setup
file and folder permissions so only your user can get to things.
 
does it have to be NTFS?

does it have to be NTFS?

If you want:
- It to be read natively by WIndows 2000/XP/2003/Vista machines
AND
- It to allow you to assign permissions on the files/foders so only your
user can easily obtain access...

Yes.

No other native Microsoft File System allows you to assign File/Folder
permissions the way NTFS does.

Store the device in a secure (locked, in simple terms) location
(closet, file cabinet, etc.) when not in use.
