PUT the Common Tasks Pane on desktop!

I've seen all the messages about how to fix the problem when the Common
Tasks Pane intrudes on the desktop. You navigate to such-a-key and fix
the PersistMoniker value.

My question is, how would you *CREATE* this effect? Not that I want
Common Tasks on the desktop, but someone might. More importantly, it's
tough to empirically prove that the solution works unless you can
recreate the problem.

OK, the Common Tasks don't work on the desktop. That's reasonable. But
I still want to create the situation so I can say with certainty that
the fix *does* fix it. From your response I have the impression you do
know how it happens, yes?

Its caused by a corruption in the PersistMoniker value in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00021400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex\ExtShellFolderViews\{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

I don't recall exactly what the corruption was, or if it was just being pointed to a non-existant, or no, file. The default value for this entry is: file://%userappdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

It's caused by the absense of the key.

Thanks, David. Has been so long since I dealt with that one.

You have to edit the program, it's just skeleton code.

Funny, I have Spad by D Bolling and DirMagic (subscribers version) by Michael Mefford. Yet nuffin by you.

My theory on the cause.

Something deletes the htt files registry reference (perhaps windows setup, possibly a registry cleaner). Next time the folder is opened (ie after logon), if there is no saved folder settings then windows treats it as a normal folder. So it sniffs (determining if music or picture files) to get the template to use.

The desktop is a folder window with a transparent background, no border and sized to fit the screen.

Just deleting the key doesn't cause it to happen, presumbably because there are saved settings.

I didn't quite understand "You have to edit the program, it's just
skeleton code." I don't see a program, skeletal or otherwise?!

(How come you don't have any of my great PC Magazine programs?? O well!
The time to collect 'em all was before they started charging for access
to the Utility Library)

Based on the other thread you pointed out I was able to produce a
similar effect:

1. Rename PersistMoniker
2. Export HCKU\...\Bags\2\Shell to a .REG file
3. Edit the .REG file changing \2\Shell to \1\Desktop
4. Insert a line at the top that deletes the existing
HKCU\...\1\Desktop
5. Launch the .REG file
6. Log off/on

That makes the desktop look and act like a regular folder. No
wallpaper, yes Common Tasks (and the links *work*). BUT... simply
restoring the PersistMoniker value doesn't fix it. Well, enough time
spent on this. Thanks all!

You have to restart explorer as the desktop folder is always open so is only set at program startup. I was confused posting threads to other posts to save typing and was doing you and someone else. I might have inctrl5 somewhere.

Ctrl + Alt + Shift and Close or Cancel in the Shutdown dialog
Closes down Window's shell in a normal shutdown without logging off.. Use Task Manager's File - New Task (Run) ... dialog to start Explorer to restart the shell.
